Immunization Awareness, Initiative and Action
Aug 01, 2011

Awareness

While immunization awareness is important all throughout the year, August is typically designated as National Immunization Awareness Month.  This is the time of year when parents prepare for their children’s return to school, students are heading off to college, and healthcare workers turn their attention to the upcoming flu season.  Therefore, it’s a critical time to ensure we are up-to-date with our recommended immunizations.

Initiative

While we often discuss immunization recommendations here on Shot of Prevention, we will also be commemorating National Immunization Awareness Month by highlighting several new initiatives.

Parent Perspective:  Those who comment here on Shot of Prevention, and on our Vaccinate Your Baby Facebook page, often explain that their immunization decisions have been based on their own personal experiences.  By highlighting different parent perspectives this month, we hope that people will feel comfortable in addressing their immunization concerns and take the time to learn from the experiences and insight of others.

Professional Profiles:  It has been my experience that some people are still unfamiliar with the complexities of immunization research, development, policy and safety.  By profiling various organizations and professionals this month, we hope our readers will appreciate the passion that drives vaccines advocates to make a positive impact on children and public health.

Injection of Fun:  In my opinion having a sense of humor is essential to maintaining good health. This month we will share several immunization videos that not only
communicate a message regarding the importance of immunizations, but do so in a fun and entertaining way.  We hope you will enjoy these creative efforts and share them with others.

Action

This month we want to encourage our supporters to speak out as vaccines advocates.  Here are a few simple ways you can take action:
(1)   If you have a professional or parent perspective that you would be willing to share on Shot of Prevention, please contact us at info@vaccinateyourfamily.org for consideration.
(2)    Visit and “like” and encourage your family and friends to “like” our Vaccinate Your Family Facebook page. Join others who use the page to stay up-to-date with vaccine-related news and share in immunization conversations.
(3)   Be more proactive about sharing articles posted on, or recommended by, Shot of Prevention and follow @Vaxyourfam on Twitter, and Vaccinate Your Family on Instagram.
(4)   Suggest your friends visit the Vaccinate Your Family website to learn more about vaccine safety and effectiveness.
(5)   Talk with your doctor about vaccines and/or boosters you should be getting to protect yourself, your family and your community.

If you should know of any other events to mark National Immunization Awareness Month, feel free to share them below.  We look forward to your participation in the month ahead.
