One Small Life. One World Forever Changed.
May 10, 2011

Any parent who has ever held their newborn child in their arms knows that it is an indescribable moment – a moment that changes your world forever, in ways that you can’t imagine.
That was definitely the case for Felicia and Daryl Dube when they welcomed their son Carter in December 2009.  What they didn’t know was that his life – and his battle – would lead them down a path that no one could ever be prepared for.
At 7 weeks of age, Carter Dube lost his life to pertussis, also known as whooping cough.  But his story – his birth, his short time with his family, and his battle with pertussis – has forever changed the lives of countless people.
In hopes of sparing other families the pain that Carter had to endure, Felicia and Daryl found themselves in a new role – not only as Carter’s mother and father – but one of vaccine advocate.  They spoke out, boldly and courageously, to help educate others about the prevalence of pertussis, the threat it poses to infants too young to be vaccinated, and the importance of “cocooning” children by vaccinating the people around them.   Their mission has not only changed their lives, but has helped protect new life.

Brennan Claire Dube was born on April 29th, weighing in at 7 lbs 1 oz, 19 inches long

Today we want to congratulate them on the birth of their daughter Brennan Claire Dube.  Brenna is another small life, destined to change this world forever and we welcome her with joy.
In preparing for Brenna’s arrival, the Dube family has taken every precaution to protect themselves and their newborn from pertussis.  Not only have they had their own Tdap boosters (to immunize against Tetanus, Diphtheria and acellular Pertussis), but they have insisted that anyone who comes in contact with Brenna has also taken the same precautions.  Their advocacy has not only encouraged other parents to share their stories of vaccine preventable disease, but has inspired many of our own readers to take action by getting  Tdap boosters.
We are thrilled that Brenna is happy and healthy, and we are so proud of the Dube’s for all they have done for Carter, for Brenna and for countless other families.   Their efforts continue to change this world and protect the health of children everywhere.
